We don’t speak sustainability and green living that much up here. Not because we don’t care but more because Hong Kong Madame has been creating with the idea of offering fun and stress-free lifestyle tips and not really with the idea of teaching you anything. Yet, it’s difficult today to speak lifestyle without speaking sustainability and I thought: why not sharing those 3 initiatives that I didn’t know about before and are actually pretty easy to deal with no matter how busy are our daily lives?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m absolutely not trying to have you feel guilty and I am myself very very far from being perfect and from living a sustainable life. But I’ve been trying to improve, little by little, and thought some of you might be interested in hearing about the steps I’m doing and the brands and initiatives I am discovering.
Did you know that recycling your Nespresso capsules in Hong Kong was contributing to food rescue programs?

Once collected, your Nespresso capsules are taken to a local recycling plant. Aluminium is then separated from the coffee residue.
Aluminium is an infinitely recyclable material so it will be re-melted into recycled aluminium. But the part that I had no idea about, and which I guess you did not know either, is that the coffee grounds are taken to a local farm and be repurposed as natural compost to fertilise the soil and help grown vegetables in the New Territories. How cool is that?

Knowing that a monthly donation of vegetables is made to local food rescue program Food Angel in order to support their mission of redistributing nutritious hot meals to the underprivileged communities of Hong Kong.
Oh and for every recycling bag you buy, the proceeds (HKD 0,5) will be redistributed to Food Angels too.
So basically, you can support Nespresso sustainable initiatives by just doing what you were doing before, drinking coffee (and that I can tell you I drink a lot). Just make sure to recycle your capsules. How to easy? Easy peasy, you just have to drop off your recycling bag with empty capsules at the recycling point in store whenever you go there for a refill. How simple?

Don’t you sometimes feel like you are the least conscious and sustainable when traveling? I mean, I do try to make efforts as home but whenever I’m traveling and not in my daily routine I feel like all my good intentions are going away. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one like that. The Landmark Mandarin Oriental recently launched a Living Well Partnership aiming at promoting sustainability awareness among global travellers while helping improving the life of Hong Kong people.
This partnership is raising funds for the Healthy Lifestyle Fund of Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Foundation providing wellness programmes for those in needs from the distribution of vegetarian and healthy lunch boxes or every-day essentials to underprivileged people to the organisation of community events promoting healthy eating and sustainable sourcing. Guests can choose to add 1% to their hotel bill to support the partnership and also buy the niin Hope bracelet at The Oriental Spa for HKD 350, all proceeds going to the Healthy Lifestyle Fund.
I also love it that the initiative is not only about raising fund (even though I know money is important for those local charities and associations) but about changing the way guests are consuming and help them switch to a more sustainable lifestyle by offering:

- Green amenities such as the beautiful and sustainably sourced bathroom amenities from Cochine Saigon (did I already told you about my crazy addiction to hotels bathroom amenities?)
- In-house freshly purified and filtered water to reduce the use of plastic bottles and the carbon emissions generated by transporting bottled mineral water
High five to The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, we need the big ones like you to show us the way to a more sustainable lifestyle.
Did you know that most of the plastic “goodies” you use could easily be replaced by eco-friendly products?
Whenever you start documenting yourself about sustainability, you quickly realise that plastic is a recurrent topic and that plastic pollution is now a critical issue that we need to address. Again, don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely not living a plastic-free life but yet, doing some researches I found that some of the “vital” plastic goodies I am using in my daily live can easily be replaced by eco-friendly products.
Have a quick look at Plastic-Free HK and you’ll realise that implementing a little bit of consciousness and sustainable living in our day to day lives can be easier than we think. Good job to them on selling thoughtfully designed and ecologically crafted products and making sustainable living looks that appealing!
Not sure where to start?
As for me, I started with reusable lunch boxes and coffee cups. Grabbing a salad at the salad bar next door? You’ll see, they won’t have any problem at all with you asking to put the salad in your box instead of in a throwable plastic one. Same with your morning coffee. Plus you’ll see, you might even get a little extra discount for that.
Have some sustainable living tips you wanna share with us? Initiatives that you would like us to hear about? Why don’t you shoot us an email at contact@hongkongmadame.com ? We are looking forward hearing more from you!
