A day without gambling in Macau?

April 22nd 2011

A day without gambling in Macau?
An impossible task? Far from it!

Leave Hong Kong in the morning, not too early, you don’t want to overdo it… The best is to arrive around midday to have the time for an hour long stroll around the old town. Visit a temple, two churches, just to tick them off your list. And then you can take a good half hour for some shopping. Venture into the small flowery streets and the market stalls. The only thing is, there’s nowhere to sit down for an aperitif! Thankfully, we have a better idea… Hop into a taxi and head over to Fernandos. It’s a Portuguese restaurant that has been in the same family for generations. Whilst you wait to be seated you can sip a “cerveza” in the sun. We highly recommend the grilled chorizo! Inside, the dining room is packed with checkered covered tables for a cosy atmosphere…. We loved the garlic prawns (a house specialty) and the ribs.
After a small digestive stroll by the sea, catch a taxi to head back across to the City of Dreams. It’s time for the show: The House of Dancing Water! A show that is all the rage at the moment, combining circus, diving, dancing and motor cross performances. Does that sound strange to you? A touch! We weren’t overly keen on the outcome, but we have to admit that the artists’ performances were impressive. A special word on the divers (that were, by the way, very fit) and the motor cyclists. Despite the fact that they appear out of nowhere, the audience is immediately taken by them. Great Oooohs and Aaahhs punctuate the various stunts performed by the leather booted acrobats. The day is over. If you’d like to finish in style, travel back to Hong Kong by helicopter. A grand finale!
