BlackSalt - a MUST TRY to (re)discover Indian/Sri Lankan cuisine

By Lily

A little house in the side path of Fuk Sau Lane in Sai Ying Pun (in front of Locofama); the feeling that you're inviting to someone's home; two cosy tables in front of the restaurant and an intimate atmosphere inside... Welcome to BlackSalt.

Owned by chef Taran Chadha and his family, the flavours of BlackSalt cuisine are Sri Lankan, Indian, Nepalese and Bhutanese. The menu is designed for sharing with a selection of 'shortplates' and the chicken as a signature main dish. Chef Taran uses natural ingredients and most of the dishes are vegetarian and super healthy. One more reason to try (and love) BlackSalt.

I have started with the BS Okra Fries - made with chickpea flours served with a delicious onion and chilli mayo sauce. A must try to start your dinner.
Then I have discovered the intriguing What's the Mattar Paneer?, an incredible pan-seared curd with tomatoes. Impossible to describe as it is magic, fresh and super tasty. Must try number two.
The Konkan Coast Fishcake follows, made with hand-chopped barramundi and served with a coconut curry and cashew nut aioli. It made me change my mind with fish cake that is usually not my cup of tea.
Last starter for sharing, I have then tried the Keralan Beetroot Chops. A crispy beetroot patty topped with charred avocado, spiced spinach ‘porridge’, fresh coconut and crispy brussels sprouts, with a dollop of fresh hung yoghurt. Excellent. Again!

The Poulet Tiki Masala is Chef Taran's signature dish. Locally sourced and free range, it is cooked for hours and confited which makes it tender and so good. It is served with pilaf, chopped salad, 'raita' remoulade and the fluffiest, most amazing garlic naan bread

And finally, last but not least - the Carrot Halwa Cheesecake is incredible. Make sure you are trying it before you're leaving BlackSalt! Chef Taran cooked the carrots in milk, whipped with cream cheese and top with coconut sugar cashes and a Tahiti vanilla ice cream. Incredible.

The whole dinner is a WOW. BlackSalt is a must try. I have had a huge crush for this restaurant where prices are friendly and the whole experience is just perfect.
Well done, thank you and see you very soon! :)
