First launched In 1963, diptyque’s iconic scented candle marks its 60th anniversary this year. Here are five things you probably didn’t know about the brand and its bestseller product.

diptyque first started as a fabric and wallpaper brand

Founded by interior designer Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, painter Desmond Knox-Leet and designer Yves Coueslant, diptyque first opened its doors on 34 boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris, in 1961, as a boutique for the trio to sell their own upholstery fabric designs. It quickly evolved into a home goods elegant bazaar where one could find unexpected accessories until the founders came up with the idea of creating their own coloured candles. It’s the candle-maker they contacted who convinced them to make scented candles instead.

Tea, Hawthorn and Cinnamon were the first three fragrances to be launched

In 1963, the brand released its first trio of scented candles: Aubépine (Hawthorn), Cannelle (Cinnamon) and Thé (Tea). It was followed by the launched of L’Eau, diptyque’s very first eau de toilette inspired by a potpourri recipe and based on notes of cinnamon, rose, clove, geranium and sandalwood.

diptyque’s herbarium now extends to almost 50 scents

Candle after candle, the brand has built a unique palette of almost 50 scents ranging from the three original fragrances to newer ones such as Citronnelle (Lemongrass) or Fleur de Cerisier (Cherry Blossom).

These are the three bestselling candles

Baies (Berries), Figuier (Fig Tree) and Feu de Bois (Wood Fire)

All the candles are made in France

diptyque has two factories, one in Provence and one near Paris. This is where all the candles are hand-poured. What’s more, the brand prides itself in never using a synthetic fragrance in their candles.
