121BC: A Tapas-style Italian

December 18th 2014

By Delphine

“ Plates made to share”: that’s the moto at 121BC! Indeed, sharing and conviviality are part of the rules here: only one long wooden table in the middle of a small room where you’ll find expats and locals mixing.

The restaurant has been the craze of Sydney for years, and after only a year of opening in Hong Kong, 44 Peel Street in Central is already a landmark for many unconditional regulars and fans. With such a lovely manager, really nice waiters, a wide selection on Italian wines served by the glass or bottle, not to mention the quality of the food, we just want to come back with a lot more friends.

The idea is simple: order as many “tapas” you want, they arrive one by one and are placed in the middle, then everyone shares food chatting and laughing. The bar tender gives suggestions on wines as he tells you his story in a delicious Italian accent. The slate board menu changes everyday, depending on the findings at the market. The caponata sends us straight to Sicily, the Prosciutto, Ricotta and gnocchi make us want to say “gracie mille” with all sorts of gestures. The permanent great atmosphere will quickly make you forget any bad day.

And if you just want to get a drink, the bar opens at 5:30pm. The wine list itself is worth a little detour.
