I must confess a deep passion for afternoon teas, especially in hotels. There is something decadent and quite satisfying about spending the afternoon in a hotel and indulging yourself to a variety of mini bites. The only thing with afternoon tea sets is that they seem to be pretty much the same all the time: mini-sandwiches, scones, sugary bites … Always lovely but never surprising. So when I heard Grand Café was launching new themed afternoon sets, I knew I have to give it a go.
A beautiful room bathing in sunshine, a relaxing view of the garden and city skyline …. Definitely not the worst place to indulge yourself.

I am going to start with the very intriguing “Sam Dim Sam” set. At 3:15 PM, “Sam Dim Sam” in Cantonese, is the usual time when tea is taken in Hong Kong. It’s hot today so I am gonna go for an iced Hong Kong milk tea, so good! Forget the mini-sandwiches and scones, you’ll be treated to homemade traditional dim sum such as the bbq pork puff pastry, the minced pork dumpling with quail egg and the super tender sesame shrimp. Definitely not your usual tea set. But ouah so good! The highlight of it being the Grand Café’s signature Hainanese chicken rice. This item is killing it. The flavours … I would definitely be back just for this one. As for the sugary treat, it wouldn’t be a proper HK style set without an egg tart right? A set that is perfect for expat people like me, willing to try an array of HK style bites, and is also a homey choice for local diners.
Lobster lovers should definitely go for the Lobsterlicious set: warm lobster sub in charcoal bun, lobster croquette, lobster claw cocktail and lobster bisque. And a refreshing selection of sugary treats such as the mango pudding and the super fresh coconut and mango crepe.
I warn you, those sets are not for little players … be prepared to indulge yourself with loads and loads of treats (plus each set comes with madeleines and macarons). But hey there is no wrong in treating yourself to a proper feast from time to time right?
