COMMISSARY: let’s go to California!

January 6th 2017

Have you noticed this newly opened restaurant on Pacific Place 4th floor? I definitely have to try it: lovely green terrace outside, modern design, it is so welcoming. But what does this name mean? Looking on internet, I find out it’s a kind of cafeteria for workers in military or mining camps. Well…. Not that appealing…. But trust me, the name does not reflect the actual atmosphere nor the plates’ content.

Talking about the plates, they are 100% Californian style which means simple recipes, large portions and comfort dishes. OK, this could be a bit scary for the scale, especially during this “post Xmas Eve and NYE” diet time. Don’t worry, looking at the menu, you will also find healthy salads such as the Kale and pumpkin one, seafood, grilled chicken and veggies. All are good and tasty. I won’t say the apple pie with vanilla ice-cream is the lightest desert I ever had but you can always opt for the Flan, a bit lighter or a freshly squeezed pineapple juice.
If you just want to feel good during these cooler day, run for the double cheeseburger, the southern fried chicken, the St Louis Pork ribs, the homemade French fries and the banana split. So comforting.
Chef Morgan McGlone wants almost everything to be last-minute homemade, even the pickles, sauces, pastries and dressings. It might take a bit longer but it’s worth the wait and who could blame him for that?

At the end, simple but pleasant recipes for a very reasonable cost, especially in this area.
If you chose to sit outside, it will be self service, which means you order inside and you go get your plates by yourself once they’re ready. Maybe that’s where the name comes from….
