My relationship with food has always been complicated. Have I starved myself thinking I was too fat? Yes. Have I found comfort in food, compulsively eating sweets only to hate myself the minute I was done? Yes. Have I eaten my feelings more than once? Absolutely. And I know I’m not the only one. While I now have a much more reasonable approach to food - no longer hating myself when I indulge and knowing how to balance without starving - it's taken years of work to get here. I still have relapses from time to time, especially when I'm stressed and tend to think chocolate is the answer to all my problems.

As a 90s kid, media representation of women's bodies probably contributed to my struggles. Thankfully, things are better these days. It's not perfect, but in recent years, I've started following social media accounts that encourage looking at food and workouts not to get skinnier, but to get healthier. These accounts promote a sustainable approach to nutrition - one that isn’t about starving yourself or feeling guilty for eating a chocolate bar when you're sad but recognising that we're human and can't be perfect. Instead, they focus on building a healthier relationship with our bodies.

This sustainable approach to nutrition is at the core of what Juliette Eav, a French certified nutrition coach based in Hong Kong, does. When she reached out to tell me more about her services, I was all ears and knew I had to share her journey and insights with you.

From corporate to coach: Juliette’s journey

Juliette's leap from the corporate world to becoming a certified nutrition coach began at a life-changing seminar in 2020. She attended Unleash the Power Within (UPW), a dynamic event hosted by Tony Robbins. This four-day seminar was more than just goal-setting and overcoming fears—it was a turning point for her. She realised she needed to redefine her life on her own terms, starting with her health. "I began to set fitness goals for the first time and paid closer attention to the quality of the food I eat," she shares.

A shift in fitness goals: from aesthetics to well-being

Her approach to fitness evolved over time. Initially motivated by aesthetic reasons, she soon recognised the deeper benefits of strength training. "Going to the gym transitioned from a chore into an act of self-care for long-term health," she explains. Her fitness goals shifted from superficial desires to a focus on functional strength and mobility. "I want to be able to move gracefully without feeling any limitations and have a complete control over my body," she says.
This holistic approach extended to her nutrition as well. Juliette moved away from processed foods and started making informed decisions based on nutritional values. "I used to eat whatever I felt like to satisfy my hunger or cravings. Now, I explore new ingredients with health benefits and incorporate them into my diet," she notes.

Her Nutri'Chef program: an integrated and pleasure-based approach to nutrition

Juliette's mission to help individuals transform their figure through delightful nutrition led her to develop the Nutri'Chef Program. Unlike typical nutrition programs, Nutri'Chef combines nutritional education, interactive games, and hands-on cooking experiences. "It’s about becoming self-reliant in making informed food decisions and developing practical skills to implement healthier dietary habits in the daily life.," she explains.

Her approach focuses on addressing bigger issues rather than getting bogged down in calorie counting. "When it comes to nutrition, whether it’s for weight loss or optimal health, it's more important to minimize ultra-processed foods and incorporate whole foods into your diet," she asserts. The Nutri'Chef Program teaches participants to plan and cook delicious low carb meals, fostering a deeper appreciation for nutritious food, and proving that ‘’it’s not about eating less , but smarter’’.

Nutri'Chef Program is also adapted to domestic helpers  for employers who understand that investing in their nutritional education can yield tremendous benefits. With the right knowledge and skills, helpers who are the primary cook can significantly improve a household's overall health, and influence children's eating habits positively, becoming a true wellness partner.

Hong Kong’s Influence on nutrition and wellbeing

Having lived in Hong Kong for over a decade, Juliette appreciates the city's blend of indoor and outdoor activities, which promote an active lifestyle. However, the convenience-oriented culture can pose challenges for maintaining a balanced diet. "It's up to each person to make conscious choices to prioritize their health, whether that means meal prepping or seeking out nutritious dining options," she emphasises.

When she’s not cooking at home, she enjoys dining out at Chachawan, Samsen, and Mam’amis, where she indulges in her love for Thai and Vietnamese cuisine.

What’s Next? An online platform and more!

Juliette is working on an exciting online platform to support individuals worldwide embarking on their health journeys. For a monthly fee, members will have access to her library of nutritious, low-calorie recipes, generate a shopping list and create their own meal plan with their favourites dishes. ‘’No more guesswork, no more logging every morsel," she promises. The platform will feature weekly webinars, cooking demos and articles to guide the members towards a healthier lifestyle, and a community for members to share insights and celebrate progress.

Additionally, Juliette is catering junk boat parties and small group private events  to show that healthy eating can be delicious and fun. "Eating healthy is not boring and can be as varied as delicious!" she declares.
