La Terrace by Louise: I came for pâté, stayed for the scallops, and left with another booking the next week

If I had to design my ideal French bistro menu, it would look a lot like the one at La Terrace by Louise. This relaxed interior-exterior dining concept on the ground floor of Michelin-starred Louise takes all the elegance of French cuisine and gives it a refreshingly relaxed twist. It’s the perfect spot for an after-work apéro, a weekend gathering with friends, or, let’s be honest, a full-on food affair for those (like me) who can never say no to one more dish.

I’ve always had a soft spot for pâté en croute (HKD 194) - there’s just something so utterly French, so unapologetically indulgent about it. And here? Chef Loïc Portalier nails it. Add a dollop of Dijon mustard, and I’m in heaven. A girl can dream of covering the world championship of pâté en croûte someday (yes, it’s a thing - Google it), but for now, I’m quite content to indulge right here in Hong Kong.

Then there’s the Scallop Crudo (HKS 248). A newcomer to the menu and an instant favourite. Bright, delicate, and kissed with citrus and smoked oil - it’s a dish that feels as chic as La Terrace itself. The Onion Agnolotti (HKD 208) also deserves a spotlight: pillowy parcels of comfort, smothered in Comté cheese and walnuts. It’s the kind of dish that makes you close your eyes for just a second and think, “Oh, this is good.”

For those who know me, black pudding is one of my sweet spots (don’t knock it till you try it), and the Spicy Black Pudding at La Terrace hits all the right notes - rich, bold, a bit spicy, and perfectly balanced with shallots and red endives.

And finally, the pièce de résistance: Louise’s Signature Roasted Chicken (HKD 688 for half a chicken – serves two). Tender, juicy, and served with fragrant Niigata rice and green salad. It’s rustic French dining at its best - comforting, sharable, and completely worth the indulgence.

Save room for dessert… or don’t, I won’t judge.I adored the zingy Passion Fruit & Saffron, but if you’re more of a classic sweets lover, the Vanilla, Pecan & Chocolate will hit all the right notes. And let’s not forget the Clementine Eton Mess – a playful mix of crème fraîche, meringue, and pure sunshine in a bowl.

Whether you’re sipping cocktails alfresco or perched in the plush indoor lounge, La Terrace by Louise strikes the perfect balance of casual and elevated. The vibes are relaxed, the dishes are spot-on, and the experience? Très, très satisfying.

Chef Loïc Portalier has truly created a menu that feels like a love letter to French cuisine, with just enough modern flair to keep it exciting.
