I have a love/hate relationship with my hair. For years, I’ve only really liked myself as a light blonde – whether it was soft highlights or full-on colour, anything lighter than my natural tone just felt more “me”. A few years ago, I went all in with polar blonde. And I loved it. But keeping that colour crisp and icy came at a cost: four to five hours at the salon every couple of months, religiously. Back then, I had the time and patience for it.
Now? I’m a mum. I barely have time to sit down with a coffee, let alone commit half a Saturday to hair upkeep. On top of that, years of that regimen (plus a good old postpartum hair crisis episode) had left my strands feeling tired and brittle, even though I always opted for organic products and tried my best to do everything “right”. So for the past two years, I’ve let my hair breathe. No colour, no lightening – just the occasional trim and a mission to grow back healthy locks.
Fast forward to now: my hair’s looking stronger, shinier, and definitely healthier. But... it’s also darker than I’m used to, and I was starting to miss that sunny glow. I wasn’t looking for anything dramatic – just a little something to liven things up. Something natural. A soft, sun-kissed effect, like I’d just come back from a beach holiday. Cue: Love Hair.

Tucked away on Wellington Street, just above the Central hustle, Love Hair is the kind of place you stumble upon and immediately want to gatekeep. Located in an old walk-up building (yes, a few stairs are involved), the space opens into what might just be the most charming salon I’ve seen. It feels more like a friend’s beautiful, plant-filled apartment than a hairdresser. Wooden touches, lots of greenery, calming light – honestly, it’s an oasis.
And the warm welcome? Just as lovely. Elli, the salon manager, made me feel instantly at home, and the vibe is super relaxed. The team is international, experienced, and they get expat hair—something that’s not always a given in Hong Kong. Bonus points: they’ve just welcomed Sam (@sam.lovehairhk on Instagram), a new French hairstylist. If, you panic at the idea of your instructions getting lost in translation, having someone who speaks your language is a huge relief.

Sam and I started with a Colour Fan Analysis – a new personalised service to help determine the tones best suited for your skin. After our consultation, we agreed on soft, golden highlights to brighten things up without going full-on blonde. The result? Perfection. My hair looks like it’s been gently sunlit, with zero harsh lines or brassy bits. Just that effortless "I-just-got-back-from-holiday" glow I’d been craving. All achieved in two hours, including a relaxing head massage during the hair wash, and a lot of chit-chats with Sam.

And I’m not the only one swooning - Love Hair just turned 9 in Hong Kong and continues turning heads for its thoughtful service offerings. They’ve just launched a Blowdry Masterclass for those looking to master their own styling at home (am I the only one to be absolutely dumb when it comes to styling my hair?), and they also offer Hair Extensions for a bit of volume or drama. All while maintaining their eco-conscious ethos: reclaimed wood interiors, filtered water systems, low-chemical treatments, and a serious commitment to sustainability.
Would I go back? Without hesitation. Between the salon’s laid-back charm, the genuinely talented team, and a colour job I absolutely loved, Love Hair is now firmly on my regular rotation (well not so regular since I opted for a low-maintenance colour – but I’m definitely planning to visit again occasionally for some pampering). It’s rare to find a place that nails both atmosphere and expertise—but this little spot in Central manages to do both, beautifully.
So if you’ve been on the hunt for a salon that feels like a treat and delivers real results? This is your sign – and don’t forget to quote SAM20 for a 20% off your first booking.
