Polaris Hong Kong is the first and only cryotherapy center in the city. They’ve just opened in Causeway Bay a 2,000 square feet luxurious facility, offering three cryotherapy treatments: whole body, localized and facials.
When I’ve heard that Cristiano Ronaldo or LeBron James were using cryotherapy for faster recovery and Hollywood stars like Demi Moore, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston as part of their beauty and wellness routine, it was enough to convince me to try!
A bit of science…
Cryotherapy is a clinically proven non-invasive treatment with a number of benefits for beauty, overall wellness and athletic performance. By exposing the skin to cool dry nitrogen gas reaching sub-zero temperatures, it triggers a natural body’s response:
…and the experience!
I tried the whole body cryotherapy. Wearing specific gloves and shoes, I entered a cryosauna, progressively filled with 6 to 10 liters of nitrogen gas to cover my body – excluding the head – for 3 minutes, reaching a temperature between -90° and -140°C.
So I know what you’re expecting me to say… Yes, it’s cold. But it’s very manageable and the 3 minutes didn’t feel long at all! Your head being outside and your therapist being with you all the time, no claustrophobia feeling neither.
I have been quite impressed by the effect that I felt quite fast too. I entered the cryosauna pretty sore from some heavy training in the days before and a regular shoulder pain bothering me. After the session, once the cold effect gone, muscle soreness and shoulder pain were reduced to a stage that usually requires a pro massage and a good long night of sleep.
Localized cryotherapy and cryo facials involve cool dry nitrogen gas released over specific targeted areas of exposed skin. With different levels, it can help relieving tendonitis, toning specific zones of the body, treating acne, wrinkles or scars.
Like any therapy, it’s recommended to repeat the session at a certain pace and for a minimum of time to see the benefits and the process is supervised by a professional therapist who follows you.

Cryotherapy is a clinically proven non-invasive treatment with a number of benefits for beauty, overall wellness and athletic performance. By exposing the skin to cool dry nitrogen gas reaching sub-zero temperatures, it triggers a natural body’s response:
- endorphins (the happiness hormones!) are released
- adrenaline is rushed, boosting brain power and physiological efficiency
- collagen is massively produced (3 to 5 times more that the regular natural production!)
- immune system is strengthened, allowing better energy levels
- toxins are flushed and enriched blood is pumped, increasing oxygen and nutrients supply
- swelling and inflammation are controlled, leading to better recovery
