What I love about Hong Kong? This great mix of cultures, this so international spirit and the feeling that this is one the few places in the world where you find such a perfect melting pot of everything from people to languages to culture but also food.
Speaking of food, I was quite excited when I heard about Bao Bei, the “Made in Hong Kong” eatery and lounge that features East meets West dishes and cocktails! Quite promising isn’t it?
Grab a good friend, or maybe more than one and start with some cocktails. A Co-Colada (rum, fresh coconut, pineapple juice & coconut milk) and a Typhoon No.10 (Tanqueray, osmanthus honey, orange and lemon juice, egg white, osmanthus jelly cake). So refreshing and very Instagram friendly also!
I love the atmosphere in there. Subdued lights, beautiful decor, not too much tables (I hate it when a place is packed of tables), comfy sofas, trendy people and chit-chatting … My idea of “the perfect place for catching-up diner with friends”.
I was lucky enough to try many dishes! Let’s start with the baos … I was a little bit disappointed with the Wagyu Beef Baoger. The beef was way too cooked for me, such a shame! The Kobe Pork Belly Bao one was more my thing.
But I found my real happiness within the choice of small plates. Korean Bulgogi lettuce wraps are just perfect finger food. Easy to grab, easy to hit, spicy and tasty with that special touch of kimchee. Rice Cake Carbonara are crazy good.
Hydrating ourselves with two more cocktails, a very spicy Som Tam (gin, green papaya juice, chili and pepper syrup, fresh lime syrup) and a creamy and fruity Mango Pomelo (Sago- white rum, fresh mango, pomelo, mango juice, sago).
Let’s order more food! Mapo Tofu Fries – fries, minced pork, tofu, chili, spring onions - yum! So good! Those ones are pretty good, very pornfood indeed and quite spicy.
To be honest, I did not really like the deserts but anyway I was too stuffed already to really enjoy and all I could think about was “oh my god, I love Rica Cake Carbonara”.
Next time, I’ll stick to the cocktails and small plates. And I’ll try my luck again at their happy hour game: play dice … whatever number comes out is the percentage off you get on your cocktail. How cool?
