Float on Hong Kong: Relax by floating!

By Vanessa, our Fitness Editor

Let’s start by the beginning… What is it floating?

Also called sensory deprivation, it is floating in an individual big tank called a DreamPod, filled with epsom salt and magnesium in 34 degrees water (surface skin temperature). This ultimately mimics a zero gravity environment. Weightless, muscles relax and your mind calms down, allowing you to reach a whole new state of deep mental and physical relaxation.

You can now enjoy that very special experience at Float On Hong Kong, Hong Kong’s first sensory deprivation centre.

One of the main reasons to float is of course relaxation, to help stress management. Athletic recovery is another important reason, as a form of pain relief, decreasing stress hormones, increasing the production of pleasure hormones and helping blood circulation.

But floating is also known to be great to relieve pregnancy pains, achieve a deep meditative state, help brain to rejuvenate or improve sleeping management. It also allows your body to get more magnesium (supporting nerve and muscle function, immune system, regular blood glucose levels, production of energy, low blood pressure…).

Float On Hong Kong makes the experience unique and not only about floating.

First, no phone - so it will most probably be taken away from you at your arrival - to enjoy a complete pause. Then you’re more than welcome to arrive early, have a tea, read, draw or color a book you can find there, before your session.

A session lasts for 45, 60 or 90 minutes. Each session begins and ends with some relaxing music. In the meantime, it’s your experience. You can keep the relaxing light or not, in a closed or opened DreamPod. You can sleep, meditate, think (or not) but in any case, you will relax for sure, as long as you find your way to let go and enjoy.

The epsom salt in water gives to your body best floating ever, allowing a full rest you’ve never experienced before sensory deprivation. Needless to say that it’s pretty addictive…

Behind Float On Hong Kong, there’s Dee Cheung and her husband Ciaran Hussey. Not a big surprise that this yoga teacher “brings the ocean to the city” as she likes to say, as she’s also the co-founder of SUP Yoga Hong Kong, the most famous stand up paddleboard yoga class in Hong Kong, on Stanley main beach.
