Have you heard about Ashley Sutton? No? Hum where have you been for the past few months? Definitely not partying and discovering the latest cocktail clubs in Hong Kong right? Ashley is the designer behind some of the trendiest and hottest venues in town: Ophelia, J.Borowski, Iron Fairies … Definitely shaking up Hong Kong’s nightlife with Dining Concepts. Their latest baby? Yojimbo !
Remember Boujis on Pottinger Street? Well bybye London-inspired nightclub, hello Japan-inspired fantasyland.
I actually loved the atmosphere there. You first enter in an intimate cocktail lounge paying homage to the tiny, hole-in-the-wall bars which can be found in Ginza and then move to the club part and its neon light. I haven’t had a chance to experience it (yet!) but I heard that the wild shows featuring geishas, samurai schoolgirls, Harajuku punk and Hannya girls are must see. And judging on Ophelia, I believe it’s fair to say that Dining Concept knows how to throw live shows in its venues.
Behind the bar is Alberto Aldave, coming straight from Spain but trained in London. I love his posh twist on the cocktail menu. His favourite? The Harakuju Girl – a Beefeater Gin with homemade rhubarb and raspberry syrup, Cointreau, fresh lemon juice and Champagne – a very girly look for a refreshing cocktail. My favourite? The Yojimbo, a mix of Sake, Beefeater Gin, fresh Yuzu juice, grapefruit bitters and Champagne. It sounds strong but it is not! Each cocktail has been think to come in a specific glass … so Instagram friendly.
Of course, if cocktails is not your thing (but who are you? Just joking, I am not judging you but just FYI if we were to have a drink together I’ll go for a cocktail) you have other options including Japanese whiskies, Champagne and spirits.
With a Japanese cocktail in your hand, dance the night away with all the weird and wonderful fantasies of Japan beneath Yojimbo’s Rising Sun. Kanpai!
